ROD BOUC

IN REPRIEVE

OPENING: FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 5:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.

ON VIEW: APRIL 18 - MAY 30

In the rush of everyday life, nature offers moments to pause...whether to find calm or simply take a breath.

In his solo exhibition, IN REPRIEVE, Rod Bouc turns to the unassuming landscapes of Nebraska and Ohio: unimproved dirt roads, roadside weeds, trees, and wildflowers that mark the edges of rural life. These familiar places, drawn from the artist’s years working and living in the country, carry personal memory and a quiet spiritual resonance. Through shifting light, layered marks, and richly textured surfaces, Bouc creates images where abstraction and representation meet. His paintings evoke both a recognizable sense of place and the feeling of being immersed in a calming scene from nature - an invitation to slow down and linger.

Bouc creates these works using pigment sticks - cylinders of wax, pigment, and oil - that allow him to paint through the act of drawing. Applied directly to canvas or board with the sticks, brushes, and his hands, the material builds a dense impasto surface where the physical presence of pigment suggests the illusion of landscape. For the artist, painting becomes a way to gather impressions from nature while recharging the mind - a restorative process that deepens his connection to the places that shaped him. In turn, these paintings
offer viewers a quiet passage into the landscape, a place to pause and reconnect with the natural world.
