SGG artists Michele BonDurant and Zach Van Horn masterfully manipulate paper and color to create immersive visual narratives. Through their own unique approaches, they capture the richness of the everyday through highly tactile and layered painting and collage processes.

Michele BonDurant uncovers the hidden beauty and complexity in seemingly ordinary scenes. Her work begins with painted paper and photographic elements, which she meticulously cuts, layers, and assembles into compositions full of mood and whimsy. The resulting images are both grounded and imaginative, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the familiar through textured, dreamlike landscapes.

Zach Van Horn explores how perception is shaped by the intersection of memory, genetics, and personal experience. His process begins with painting on paper, which he then cuts and reassembles into pixelated, mosaic-like surfaces. He overlays these with symmetrical, rippling lines—symbolizing internal structure—before painting representational imagery derived from his own photographs. The final step involves sanding the surface, blending all layers into a unified but multidimensional whole.

For Van Horn, his mosaics reflect our internal narrative, while the representational imagery captures the external world. The resulting interplay of texture, color, and form reflects how our perception is never static, but continually shaped and reshaped by memory, identity, and time.
