“There is only a perspective seeing, only a perspective knowing; and the more affects we allow to speak about one thing, the more eyes, different eyes, we can use to observe one thing, the more complete will our concept of this thing, our objectivity, be.”

- Friedrich Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of Morals / Ecce Homo

SGG artist Marc Ross and visiting artist Drea Cofield create paintings that command perspective - the lens through which we try to understand ourselves, and therefore, the world around us. The intentional contrast in size and structure of their bodies of work in close proximity at SGG will encourage viewers to pay attention to their natural inclination to maintain distance from certain subjects and the payoff that comes with getting close.

Columbus artist Marc Ross creates paintings that combine two visual concepts. When viewed from some distance, his canvases have a soft, luminous, atmospheric glow, obscuring surface detail and appearing as large blocks of color. When a viewer approaches the canvas for closer inspection, however, its phosphorescent effect retreats, revealing the many subtle, intricate details that comprise the whole. Marc perceives each finished painting as a metaphor for the layers of life’s experiences we encounter as we age.

Brooklyn-based artist Drea Cofield paints in the boundaries between inner subjectivity and external realities, exploring mutual desires to look, to be seen, and to find meaning and connection within greater contexts. Working from observation is key to her understanding of color, form, speed and touch, and human presence both explicit and implied. Her Send Me Your Selfie Project paintings play with the banal disposability of digital self-imaging, juxtaposing it with the permanent, time-based, fluid forms of paint and touch that emphasize the core desire that remains deeply human: to look and to be seen.
